Aunt Vadge: Did I get my period from being fingered?

Hi Aunt Vadge,

I got fingered for the first time yesterday, and today in the morning I went to the bathroom and wiped my vag and saw nothing… after a little longer I went back and found that I was bleeding. When I wiped myself it hurts a little, and I don’t know if it’s normal that I got my period early.

I’m 19 first time anything has gone up there.

Sincerely,
Newbie

Hi Newbie,

Thanks for writing. You sound like you have had a normal response to being fingered, that being your vulva and vagina may be a little bit tender. This is because most people don’t know what they’re doing – read our fingering basics article to get a better idea of what should be happening for you and your lover.

It’s also important to touch yourself so you understand what your body is like under all of those folds. Spend some time regularly to just inspect and touch yourself – get a hand-mirror and have a look, get a diagram and find each part by touch and see if you can see it. It might seem like a weird idea, but the more familiar you get with your own vagina, the easier it is to know if something is wrong.

Your period is the result of a series of hormonal triggers that started way back in the middle of your cycle (for your period at least). The time between when you ovulate and when you get your period is always the same (between 12 and 16 days), but the time between when you get your period (Day 1 of your cycle) and when you ovulate can, and does, change each cycle. This is why your period won’t always come on the same day every month, and why you can get your period early.

Having sex or putting anything into your vagina cannot bring on your period, but the activity can make it come out sooner than it might otherwise, but not by much – maybe by a few hours or a day at most.

Write back anytime you have more questions.

Warmest regards,
Aunt Vadge
