Aunt Vadge: sticky, spotting – will I be ok?

TL;DR

Spotting or bleeding after self-stimulation is not uncommon and often not dangerous. It might be due to minor cuts, hymen changes, or benign cysts. Understanding your body and recognizing when symptoms are normal or require medical attention is crucial. It’s also important to address the feelings of shame, guilt, and anxiety that may arise, promoting a healthy relationship with your body and sexuality.

Hi Aunt Vadge,

The problem: I was bleeding after I fingered myself.

The problem started: after 5-10mins when I did it. (I’m a virgin, but I do masturbate regularly and this was the first time I bled.)

The problem: Stay the same, or I think so, but today (second day) a spot came out with a little blood in it. I don’t know what to do.

My symptoms:

  • Pain â€“ no pain at all, vagina
  • Discharge â€“ just once
  • Bleeding â€“ spotting, colour not too dark nor bright
  • Growths â€“ a little bit sticky, bleeding
  • Cuts or tears â€“ not sure about it
  • Changes â€“ after I saw the blood, I stopped, and the second day, I saw a little bit spot of blood in my panties. No pain.
  • Previous treatments â€“ I was doing cycling before I touched myself
  • Feelings you have about your condition: worry, fear, anxiety, shame, guilt
Sincerely, Sticky Indonesia, age 21 _____

Hi there Sticky,

You might have cut yourself with a fingernail, or alternatively it could be that your hymen (or whatever may be left of it) came loose, got torn, or damaged (some can remain and be dislodged later). You may also have had a slightly inflamed/blocked Bartholin duct or Skene’s gland (benign cysts), and the sticky stuff might have been when that ‘popped’ and the liquid drained (like pus or fluid build-up).

This is not dangerous, but take a look at the diagrams so if it happens again, you can figure out the source of the blood and liquid.

If you are not in pain, the bleeding has stopped, and you don’t have any more symptoms, you can assume that you are ok and nothing bad will come of it.

It’s really important that your feelings are understood – it is normal to feel shame, guilt and anxiety when it comes to things you don’t understand about your body, particularly when it comes to the results of masturbating! I just want to reassure you that you are normal, and those feelings are natural, since our society makes women feel embarrassed about their bodies all the time, as a matter of course.

This isn’t right, but in many places, it’s just the way it is. Europe is very progressive, but everyone else less so!

We can all help to change how society feels about womens bodies, and that starts with yours. Frankly, it’s wonderful that you are masturbating and discovering your own body, as it will make you a better informed woman, a better lover when the time comes, and someone who understands a little more about their own body and sexuality. This is great and many women never do it. So congratulations!

Sometimes damage happens, so don’t worry too much unless you are getting excessive discharge, it smells funny, or there is unusual bleeding. If any of these things continue, you’ll need to go and be examined and have some tests done to rule out anything more serious.

Other than that, in the meantime, avoid touching your vagina until it seems fully healed, and then get out a mirror, and take a look at yourself in more detail so next time, you can try to figure out where the damage is, and what you should do about it.

Minor cuts and tears can be encouraged to heal well with a vulva and vagina-friendly cuts cream.

Write anytime – we’d love to hear from you.

Warmest regards,
Aunt Vadge
