Aunt Vadge: his hand was covered in blood but there was no pain

Hi Aunt Vadge,

My boyfriend was fingering me and I was super wet. We were getting really into and all of sudden he stopped and said “there’s a lot of blood.” His fingers were covered from tip to hand in blood. The weirdest part was I had zero pain and he’s definitely  gone harder and deeper and nothing like this has happened. I literally had my period like a week and 1/2 ago so I don’t think it’s that and it feels like more than spotting. Any thoughts?

Dear Bloodied,

The only thing I can think of is that your boyfriend has caused an injury that you can’t feel due to a lack of nerve endings in the vaginal canal. When we are turned on, our tissue fills with blood and injuries don’t feel bad. In fact, sometimes pain just feels good too. If he has nicked something with a fingernail, or bumped your cervix, bleeding can occur, but because it’s deep in your vagina, afterwards you actually can’t feel anything. It seems like mysterious bleeding when it does have a cause; you just can’t feel it.

The important thing to remember about unusual vaginal bleeding is the development of patterns – so, if this happens again, then I’d say maybe go and get examined by a doctor, in case there is something growing in your vagina or out of your cervix that when hit, bleeds. Examples of this might be a cervical polyp or a change in the cells on your cervix, to cells (from inside the cervical neck) that are very fragile and bleed easily (cervical ectropion), particularly after sex. Otherwise, if it doesn’t happen again, you’ll just have to put it into the who-knows basket and forget about it. There will be plenty of those by the time you drop dead!

Some of us have slightly different inside anatomy than others, but again, this would appear as a pattern of pain or bleeding upon certain activities, and therefore you’d be aware of it at some point. These anatomical differences could be something like a vaginal septum, which only becomes apparently when trying to stick things in your vagina, or stick them in on certain angles, but any examination by a doctor will quickly rule this out.

What would be most useful in this case is to check your boyfriend’s fingernails and just be wary of getting fingered really hard. Rough, inexperienced fingers can easily cause damage. I’m sure after this your boyfriend will be a bit more cautious, which is a good lesson learnt.

Luckily we recover quickly, but fingering damage and sex wounds can be uncomfortable, and your boyfriend getting covered in blood is probably not his favourite hottest moment. (But, you never know!)

Let me know if you have any more questions, and write anytime.

Warmest regards,
Aunt Vadge
